Here is a breathing exercise I do all the time with my students. But before I tell you… if you feel lightheaded or dizzy while doing this exercise, please sit down and breathe normally. Once the dizziness has gone away, you may return to the practice.
Get a balloon and blow it up!
It’s a great way to get your breath moving, and it engages your abdominal muscles as well. Try not to lift the shoulders when you inhale and then drop your rib cage as you exhale. Proper breathing technique should be used even in this simple exercise. When you inhale, your ribcage should expand sideways, and your abdomen should release forward and out. As you exhale, your stomach will come in. You can think of your belly button moving toward the spine on your exhale.
And don’t worry if you can’t do this right away. Some people have difficulty with this exercise. If you keep at it, it will get better. And you’ll be blowing up all the balloons for the next party before you know it!
